Wartburg Theological Seminary is delighted to announce that Michael Johnson will be joining the staff as the Vice President for Development, beginning June 1st, 2023. Mike will be based in Stillwater, Minnesota to support extensive travel and a consistent presence in Dubuque.
Mike brings over 15 years of non-profit leadership experience and extensive major gift and planned giving work to the energetic Development Team. Prior to joining Wartburg Theological Seminary, Mike served for more than 10 years with Lutheran World Relief, where he managed relationships with individuals and congregations. The work that he and their team did made a huge impact on the lives of our siblings in need around the globe.
Johnson’s work experience also includes serving as Director of Development at Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible Camp, Inc, Camp Wapo, in Amery, WI, and also at Luther Seminary, where he served as a Philanthropic Advisor and Planned Giving Specialist.
In addition to his professional work, Mike has been a long-time volunteer with Twin Cities in Motion, who produce the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon among other world class races. He has volunteered in many ways with the ELCA, currently as a member of the St. Paul Area Synod – Bega Kwa Bega Iringa Tanzania Task Force. He will be leading a trip to Tanzania this October.
He and his wife of 32 years are members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater, MN. They have three grown children and will have a wedding this summer for their oldest daughter.
Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN.
Mike notes, “I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful community. Especially after living through the changes to society from COVID-19, I appreciate the power of fellowship and working closely with others. To be a part of training our future church leaders is such an important job and I am so honored to have a part to play in that.”
Regarding this appointment, President Largen shared, “During the interview process, Mike stood out as the perfect person for this role. His many years of experience in the Lutheran Church, both domestically and internationally, will provide strong support for our strategic Development goals in the coming year. Additionally, Mike’s seasoned leadership skills and encouraging, warm presence will strengthen the entire Development team as they work together to deepen and broaden Wartburg’s robust base of committed donors, for the sake of God’s mission in the world. We give thanks to God for Mike, and look forward to welcoming him next month.
